THEY are cheap, convenient and versatile and at less than $1 per serve these simple foods can do wonders for your health.

In fact, eating them will actually help you shed body fat.

Not only do superfoods leave you feeling satisfied for longer, but they fill our bodies with antioxidants and essential nutrients we can’t produce on our own.

While it’s no secret a good diet can help extend our life span, the relative cheapness of these humble foods mean there’s no excuse for us not having them in our diets.

Still confused as to what a superfood is?

While the list is long and not definitive, they are basically foods packed with vitamins, minerals and fatty acids which give your body a massive health boost.

Just eating these cheap super foods will help you burn fat, can protect your organs from toxins, and help prevent heart disease and cancer.

If that’s not enough they can also help digestion as well as lower cholesterol and blood pressure.

Here are some which will set you back less than a dollar per serve.

Oats
1. Oats

Not only are oats a great breakfast staple, but they have a low GI which means they release sugar slowly into the body and make you less likely to reach for that mid morning cake.

They are also packed full of soluble fibre, and have been shown to reduce cholesterol levels.

Tuna

This food source is not only cheap, but great on sandwiches, pasta or salads.

It’s packed full of nutrients, including omega-3 fats. It’s also full of high quality protein and contains loads of essential nutrients and minerals such as selenium, magnesium, and potassium.

Lentils
3. Beans/pulses

They may cop a bad wrap over their gassy-inducing reputation but beans are the food to add with almost anything.

Not only are they incredibly filling, but this food is high in fibre and packed with antioxidants.

Eggs

Probably one of the most versatile foods, eggs are not only great as a snack but are an excellent source of protein, which is great news for non-meat eaters.

5. Cabbage

Another food that has had an unfair reputation for its aromatic qualities, cabbage is actually a great source of betacarotene and vitamin C. It’s also packed full of fibre so eat up.

Undoubtably the most convenient super food, bananas are not only a great snack on the run but can be eaten any time of the day.

Bananas are great for cardiovascular health and are high in potassium which helps promote good bone health.

This staple is not only great when cooked with beans and other super foods but is amazing on its own and is rich in proteins, thiamine, calcium, magnesium, fibre, and potassium.
